SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Sigsautelle & Brockway
DESCRIPTION:Homer Historian Martin Sweeney will discuss two of Homer’s more prominent businessmen of the 19th and early 20th century. Both William Brockway and Sig Sautelle focused on the need for transportation and can lay claim to activities occurring at the former Crozier’s Gun Shop on South Main Street in Homer. Sweeney\, now retired\, enjoys serving as the historian for the historic Town and Village of Homer\, NY. He is interested in researching and writing about the lives and values of past people\, especially those at the intersection of local and national history. SUMMARY:Tick Tock and Tall Tales: A Horological Happening
DESCRIPTION:Time flies—unless you’re at the Eastern States Regional\, where it ticks\, tocks\, chimes\, and occasionally cuckoos. This isn’t just any collector’s meet-up. It’s the 55th annual gathering of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors\, drawing horology enthusiasts from across the Northeast to marvel at mechanical mysteries\, trade timeless treasures\, and swap stories that are anything but secondhand. \nExplore a sprawling mart filled with clocks\, watches\, tools\, and dusty tomes that whisper of lost hours and forgotten makers. Sit in on hands-on workshops where novices become time tamers and masters reveal their secrets. And if you’ve picked up an odd little timepiece that seems to tick backwards or knows too much… bring it to the Antique Watch & Clock Roadshow. You never know what tales the gears might tell. \nIt’s all happening at the J.M. McDonald Sports Complex in Cortland\, now the new (and aptly timed) home for this curious convention. Open to the public\, $30 at the door\, and free if you’re 18 or under—because it’s never too early to develop a healthy obsession with antique mechanisms and mysterious machinery. \nFor more information\, visit nawccers.com. Just be warned: once you start down the winding path of watch lore\, it’s hard to stop… even if your watch is.

SUMMARY:“Dreams of Freedom” with Marilyn Higgins
DESCRIPTION:“Dreams of Freedom” with Marilyn Higgins \nHistory\, mystery\, and a movement that shook a nation—Marilyn Higgins invites you into the charged and transformative world of Dreams of Freedom\, her riveting new book exploring Upstate New York on the brink of Civil War. From the roaring momentum of the Erie Canal to the radical energy of abolitionists and spiritual revivalists\, this was a region ablaze with ideas—and unrest. \nIn this special talk\, Higgins shares the lesser-known stories she’s uncovered over a career spent digging through archives\, artifacts\, and 19th-century parlors. A fierce advocate for place-based storytelling\, her work with the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the National Abolition Hall of Fame brings depth and drama to what might otherwise be forgotten. And if you’ve never heard of the Abolitionist Freedom Walk—a reenactment of the 1835 canal journey and march that defied a mob to establish the New York Anti-Slavery Society—you will now. \nJoin the Cortland County Historical Society at 9 Grace Street (the former Free Methodist Church) for this fascinating look at a moment in time when America’s future hung in the balance—and Upstate New York helped tip the scale. Bring your lunch if you’d like; we’ll provide dessert and a drink. \nFree for members of the Cortland County Historical Society; $5 for curious future members.

SUMMARY:The Old State Road: Miles of Stories
DESCRIPTION:The Road That Time (Almost) ForgotThe Cortland County Historical Society invites the brave and the curious to join Val Ross for a journey down one of Central New York’s oldest and oddest byways: Joseph Chaplin’s Old State Road. First carved through the Military Tract in 1796\, this rugged route connected Oxford to Cayuga Lake—cutting through what would become a string of towns\, tragedies\, and tantalizing tales. \nFrom Horse-Killer Hill to Bloody Pond\, Texas Valley to Messengerville\, each bend in the road holds a story—some documented\, others whispered. With old maps\, construction history\, and spicy accounts of what went down along the way\, Ross’s presentation promises to be more than just a dusty detour into the past. \nLunch is strictly BYO\, but the Historical Society will sweeten the deal with a beverage and dessert. Come for the history\, stay for the scandal. \nThis event will take place at the former Free Methodist Church at 9 Grace Street\, Cortland. \nPlease call 607-756-6071 with any questions.

SUMMARY:Stagecoaches\, Saloons & the Strange Side of Travel: A Talk with Richard F. Palmer
DESCRIPTION:Before GPS and gas stations\, there were muddy turnpikes\, bumpy coaches\, and taverns where you might hear a ghost story and get a hot meal—if you were lucky. \nJoin author and history-sleuth Richard F. Palmer for a deep dive into the dusty days of stagecoaches and roadside inns in 19th-century Cortland County. With rare photographs\, traveler tales\, and tavern gossip\, Palmer revives a long-lost era when the mail was slow\, the whiskey was strong\, and the roads were… questionable. \nThis fascinating presentation and book signing will explore the quirky and crucial role early transportation played in shaping our region—and all the curious characters it carried along the way. \nPalmer is the author of The Old Line Mail: Stage Coach Days in Upstate New York (North Country Books\, 2022)\, a must-read for fans of forgotten road trips and haunted highways.
