SUMMARY:Immigrant Entrepreneurs of Cortland
DESCRIPTION:You’ve seen the names\, walked past the storefronts\, and maybe even uncovered a few stories on the Cortland Curiosities trail—but do you know the people who built them? Join the Cortland County Historical Society for a special talk with historian and former Cortland resident Dr. Diane Vecchio\, as she reveals the real lives behind the signs. \nFrom the English and Irish settlers who laid early foundations\, to the Greek restaurateurs\, Italian tradesmen\, and Eastern European Jewish shopkeepers who opened some of Cortland’s most iconic businesses—Vecchio uncovers how waves of immigrants helped shape the economic heartbeat of our city and climbed into the American middle class. \nThese aren’t just names from history—they’re the very people who turned Cortland’s curious past into a thriving present. Come connect the dots between the stories you’ve seen on the trail and the real entrepreneurs who lived them.

SUMMARY:Stagecoaches\, Saloons & the Strange Side of Travel: A Talk with Richard F. Palmer
DESCRIPTION:Before GPS and gas stations\, there were muddy turnpikes\, bumpy coaches\, and taverns where you might hear a ghost story and get a hot meal—if you were lucky. \nJoin author and history-sleuth Richard F. Palmer for a deep dive into the dusty days of stagecoaches and roadside inns in 19th-century Cortland County. With rare photographs\, traveler tales\, and tavern gossip\, Palmer revives a long-lost era when the mail was slow\, the whiskey was strong\, and the roads were… questionable. \nThis fascinating presentation and book signing will explore the quirky and crucial role early transportation played in shaping our region—and all the curious characters it carried along the way. \nPalmer is the author of The Old Line Mail: Stage Coach Days in Upstate New York (North Country Books\, 2022)\, a must-read for fans of forgotten road trips and haunted highways.

SUMMARY:Historic Costume Camp
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, Magpie is pleased to offer five sections of very special sewing camps for our students of ALL ages! Come to the historic Cortland Corset Building to learn about the clothing history of Cortland County and learn to build some different pieces of that history! We will discuss the legacy of Amelia Bloomer\, the Cortland Corset Building\, and fashion/costume from the heyday of Cortland’s manufacturing boom. According to the curiosity and interest of our students\, we will then choose 2 pieces of clothing history to reconstruct. Anything from our own bloomers and shirtwaists to Victorian walking skirts and gentleman’s knee pants.
