SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Amelia Bloomer
DESCRIPTION:Author Sara Catterall provides a fascinating look at an underappreciated woman in American history whose newspaper fostered a national conversation on women’s issues. Those who recognize the name Amelia Bloomer usually do so because of bloomers\, the clothing item named after her. While she was a rational dress advocate for a time—calling on women to abandon rigid corsets and heavy petticoats and opt for long trousers\, shorter skirts\, and sensible boots—it was “but an incident” in the larger story of her life and impact.\n\nBloomer edited and published The Lily\, the first newspaper for and by women. Founded to promote temperance\, it soon broadened to include some of the most important issues to women in that day\, including the right to vote\, and included contributions from thinkers like Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The groundbreaking paper brought the conversation from Seneca Falls right to the doorsteps of women across the expanding nation.\n\nBio: Sara Catterall is a writer with a Drama degree from NYU and an MLIS from Syracuse University. She was born in Ankara and grew up in South Minneapolis. She has worked as a librarian at Cornell University\, as a reviewer and interviewer for Shelf Awareness\, and as a professional book indexer. Her work has been published in the NEH’s Humanities magazine and The Sun magazine\, and she co-authored Ottoman Dress and Design in the West: A Visual History of Cultural Exchange. She lives with her family near Ithaca\, NY.\n\n\nBring your own lunch if you wish\, and we will provide a beverage and dessert. Admission is free for members of the Cortland County Historical Society (CCHS) and $5 for CCHS members-to-be.This event will take place at the former Free Methodist Church at 9 Grace Street\, Cortland. Please call 607-756-6071 with any questions.

SUMMARY:“Dreams of Freedom” with Marilyn Higgins
DESCRIPTION:“Dreams of Freedom” with Marilyn Higgins \nHistory\, mystery\, and a movement that shook a nation—Marilyn Higgins invites you into the charged and transformative world of Dreams of Freedom\, her riveting new book exploring Upstate New York on the brink of Civil War. From the roaring momentum of the Erie Canal to the radical energy of abolitionists and spiritual revivalists\, this was a region ablaze with ideas—and unrest. \nIn this special talk\, Higgins shares the lesser-known stories she’s uncovered over a career spent digging through archives\, artifacts\, and 19th-century parlors. A fierce advocate for place-based storytelling\, her work with the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the National Abolition Hall of Fame brings depth and drama to what might otherwise be forgotten. And if you’ve never heard of the Abolitionist Freedom Walk—a reenactment of the 1835 canal journey and march that defied a mob to establish the New York Anti-Slavery Society—you will now. \nJoin the Cortland County Historical Society at 9 Grace Street (the former Free Methodist Church) for this fascinating look at a moment in time when America’s future hung in the balance—and Upstate New York helped tip the scale. Bring your lunch if you’d like; we’ll provide dessert and a drink. \nFree for members of the Cortland County Historical Society; $5 for curious future members.

SUMMARY:The Old State Road: Miles of Stories
DESCRIPTION:The Road That Time (Almost) ForgotThe Cortland County Historical Society invites the brave and the curious to join Val Ross for a journey down one of Central New York’s oldest and oddest byways: Joseph Chaplin’s Old State Road. First carved through the Military Tract in 1796\, this rugged route connected Oxford to Cayuga Lake—cutting through what would become a string of towns\, tragedies\, and tantalizing tales. \nFrom Horse-Killer Hill to Bloody Pond\, Texas Valley to Messengerville\, each bend in the road holds a story—some documented\, others whispered. With old maps\, construction history\, and spicy accounts of what went down along the way\, Ross’s presentation promises to be more than just a dusty detour into the past. \nLunch is strictly BYO\, but the Historical Society will sweeten the deal with a beverage and dessert. Come for the history\, stay for the scandal. \nThis event will take place at the former Free Methodist Church at 9 Grace Street\, Cortland. \nPlease call 607-756-6071 with any questions.

SUMMARY:Irene: A Ghostly Play
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a dramatic comedy with a ghostly twist! IRENE takes the stage at the Center for the Arts from May 15-17. This two-act play centers around the death of Irene\, the outspoken matriarch of a Polish-American family\, and the one person who can see and hear her after her passing—her favorite grandson\, Sam. \nIn typical Irene fashion\, she’s not shy about giving her family a piece of her mind. From beyond the grave\, Irene attempts to settle her family’s long-standing issues so that she and her beloved husband Bill can finally rest in peace. But can a family as dysfunctional as this one find closure—or will Irene’s meddling leave them more tangled than ever?
